Other Divination Methods

AEROMANCY divination from the air and sky, particularly concentrating on cloud shapes, comets, and other phenomena not normally visible in the heavens. During times of great storms, the colors of the sky and movement of the rain (straight down vs. lateral bands) can be used as omens of bad things on the horizon.   A green or yellow cast in the sky is considered very unlucky and foreboding.   This has a basis in scientific fact, because these colors, often accompanied by a lack of sound (from the animals at rest) is an indication of a potential tornado.

ALCHEMY is the practice of transmutation of base metals into precious metals (e.g., gold or silver) with the aid of an esoteric substance called the "philosopher's stone".   Alchemy is not a primary form of divination, but those who practice it may, at times, use the smelting process to divine from the shapes that appear in the molten metals.   This is a highly specialized form of divination and rarely used today.

ALECTRYOMANCY is divination whereby a bird is allowed to pick corn grains from a circle of letters. A variation is to recite letters of the alphabet noting those at which a cock crows. Alectryomancy is one of the more simplistic forms of divination, but it does require quite a bit of insight on the part of the diviner.

To perform Alectrymancy, you need a bird, usually a black hen or game cock, and some grains.   You can use a chicken, rooster or other farm fowl.   If you are a city dweller, you can also use a singular OR flock of pigeons.

As a diviner, you use two full hands of grain and spread them on the ground in front of you.  You then all the birds to peck at the grains.   After a given amount of time (I use 10 minutes), you disburse the birds and then look carefully at the remaining grains. As with any divination that uses pattern recognition, you attempt to form visible patterns out of the chaos of the remaining grains.  Look for images that are of interest or importance to you and this can give you some insight into your life, your past and your future.

ALEUROMANCY is the original source of the Chinese "Fortune Cookie" .   The original form of this divination dates back to ancient Greece and was presided over, according to legend, by Apollo.   In the original form, short sentences were composed on very small piece of paper which were then rolled up into balls of flour.  The balls were then mixed up 9 times and the offered to those seeking information about their future or potential answers to specific questions.   The answers that were provided were very generic, often containing single work positive or negative responses such as "Yes" or "No', "be patient" or "not at this time".

ALOMANCY is divination by small grain sea salt.   This form of divination was the favorite of Alocer who was the Grand Duke of Hades according to some legends.    Alocer often appears as a great knight astride a massive horse.  His face is described as "Leonine" and ruddy, having a contorted vestige of a lion and speaks with a voice that contains much gravity.   To divine by salt, you fill your palm with sea salts of small grain.   You cast them on a wooden table and use the images that appear to gain a path to the future or to resolve issues.   This is similar to the image extraction of alectryomany or tea leaf reading.

ALPHITOMANCY is a divination used for the specific purpose of proving guilt or innocence.    There are two methods of Alphitomancy.   The first method offers pieces of a barley leaf to the accused persons.    The second method bakes the ground up barley leaf into small unleavened (no yeast) cakes.   In either case, the accused eat either the leaf or the cakes.  The legend states that if you are pure of heart and innocent of the accusations, you will feel no effects.  If you are guilty, you will be come ill. NOTE:  Barley leaf is a good antioxidant and has been suggested to lower (bad) cholesterol and even help with cancer, though there is currently no medical information to back this up.   The negative effects of Barley are held within the seeds, not within the leaves.   For a person to have a negative reaction, they must be predisposed with an allergy.
